Tucked between Clearwater and Largo on Florida’s Gulf Coast, Indian Rocks Beach offers everything you love about a Florida beach vacation without the high-rise hotels and tourist crowds. Known affectionately as “the locals’ beach,” IRB delivers soft white sand, warm Gulf waters, and a laid-back charm that keeps visitors coming back year after year.
What Makes Indian Rocks Beach Special
Unlike its busier neighbors, Indian Rocks Beach has maintained its Old Florida character. You won’t find chain restaurants lining Gulf Boulevard—instead, you’ll discover family-owned seafood spots, cozy cafes, and a community that values its small-town atmosphere. The beach itself features 27 public access points, more than any other Pinellas County barrier island, making it easy to find your own quiet stretch of sand.
Parking and Beach Access
The main beach access with restrooms, showers, and parking is located at 1700 Gulf Blvd (17th Avenue). Additional public restrooms can be found at Kolb Park and the IRB Nature Preserve.
Important update: Indian Rocks Beach is transitioning to paid parking in 2026. The new rate will be $4.50 per hour via the ParkMobile app at beach access parking areas. Street parking in residential areas may still be available where not otherwise posted. Arrive early on weekends, as spots fill quickly.
Top Things to Do
- Hit the Beach – The main attraction, of course. IRB’s beaches feature gentle waves perfect for families, and you can rent umbrellas and chairs from local vendors. Note that there are no lifeguards, so swim at your own risk.
- Explore the Nature Preserve – The Indian Rocks Beach Nature Preserve offers boardwalk trails and excellent bird watching. Dogs are not permitted on the beach or preserve boardwalk.
- Rent a Kayak or Paddleboard – Island Marine Rentals offers hourly to weekly rentals for exploring the Intracoastal Waterway.
- Visit the Welcome Center – Stop by 105 5th Ave N for local coupons and insider tips on what’s happening around town.
- Day Trip to John’s Pass – About 8 miles south, this historic fishing village in Madeira Beach offers shops, restaurants, and dolphin-watching cruises.

For dessert, don’t miss the Candy Kitchen or grab a key lime pie from The Pie Factory in nearby Largo.
