Why We Love This Place
Most of our biking guide assumes you’ve solved the bike problem — brought your own, or arranged a delivery. Lake Seminole Park doesn’t require either. Wheel Fun Rentals operates on site, with regular bikes, kids’ bikes, specialty cycles and even water bikes. You can arrive with nothing, rent, ride the loop, and hand everything back. For guests at our Seminole place especially, that’s the whole barrier removed.
The park itself earns the trip regardless. It’s 258 acres of designated wildlife habitat and sanctuary, built around Lake Seminole, with a two-mile multi-use trail winding through pine flatwoods. It’s genuinely shaded — a real consideration here — and it draws more than a million visitors a year without ever feeling packed, because there’s so much room.
And the wildlife is the point as much as the exercise. Raccoons, alligators, hawks, bald eagles, turtles, tortoises, waterfowl and wading birds all live here. Visitors regularly report spoonbills, great herons and ibis on the ponds.

The Trail
The two-mile loop is the heart of the park — paved, multi-use, and open to walking, jogging, cycling and inline skating. It winds through pine flatwoods rather than running along a road, which is why it’s so much shadier than most trails in the county.
There’s a one-mile cut-off partway round, which is the detail that makes this park work for mixed groups. Anyone flagging can peel off and halve the distance without anyone having to turn back or wait.
Benches and swings are placed at the good spots — overlooking the ponds and the lake — so it’s easy to stretch a two-mile loop into an hour without minding.
Renting Bikes Here
Wheel Fun Rentals operates the concession at Lake Seminole Park. They rent bicycles, kids’ bikes and specialty cycles — including the multi-passenger surrey-style bikes that guests consistently mention as the highlight of the visit — plus non-motorised watercraft including water bikes.
This is worth planning around. If you’re travelling without bikes and want one easy family ride, coming here beats arranging delivery: you turn up, rent what suits the group, and the trail starts a few steps away.
Call ahead for hours and rates, especially outside the winter season — concession hours are usually shorter than park hours.

On the Water
Lake Seminole is a working recreational lake, not just scenery. There’s a public boat ramp and dock open from 7am to dusk — freshwater, and a fee is charged — plus fishing piers.
Anglers come for bass, catfish, stripers and sunfish. The lake is open to fishing, and trotlines may be used from sunset until 9am. Boating, jet skiing and water skiing all happen here, so it’s a livelier lake than the quiet ponds suggest.

The park is also a popular wedding venue — there are two spots the county specifically flags for photographs, which tells you something about how it looks in good light.
Know Before You Go
🐊 There Are Alligators
Not a theoretical warning — this is a designated wildlife sanctuary and gators are commonly seen. Keep children close and dogs leashed and back from the water’s edge. Don’t feed anything.
🐕 Dogs Yes, Dog Park No
Dogs are welcome on leash and the paths are pleasant for walking them, but there’s no fenced dog park here. For that, head to Boca Ciega Millennium Park, which has a 1.5-acre one.
🌳 Shade Is the Selling Point
Compared with the causeway trails and the Duke Energy corridor, this park is well treed. On a hot day it’s one of the few places nearby where a midday ride is tolerable — though early is still better.
🚗 Give Yourself Time to Find Things
258 acres with lazy winding internal roads. The lakefront, the trail, and the playgrounds are spread out. Have a look at the map before you pick a lot.
💧 Pond Conditions Vary
Some visitors have noted occasional dead fish or algae at the inner ponds. It’s a natural system in a Florida summer; the lake and trail are unaffected.
