Pinellas County is genuinely good for dogs — fenced off-leash parks in almost every town, one beach where dogs can swim off-leash, and a taphouse two miles from our Largo place where your dog runs on turf while you have a beer. Here’s everything within reach of our rentals, closest first.
Read This First: The One Rule That Catches People Out
Most beaches in Pinellas County do not allow dogs at all. Not off-leash, not on-leash, not at the far end. That includes the main stretch of Clearwater Beach and St. Pete Beach. People arrive with a dog and a beach towel and get turned around.
There are exceptions, and we’ve listed them below. But the default is no dogs on the sand, so check signage before you assume.
Two more county rules worth knowing: dogs are welcome on leash in Pinellas County parks but are not allowed on boardwalks or observation towers — which rules out the best parts of a couple of parks we otherwise recommend — and handlers are limited to three dogs in the off-leash areas.

Closest to Our Largo Rental
🥇 Indian Rocks Beach Dog Park — about a mile away
107 10th Ave N, Indian Rocks Beach
The closest off-leash park to our Largo place, and a good one — fully fenced, with a dog wash station for rinsing off afterwards, water fountains and restrooms nearby. Well maintained, and usually not packed.
Two things to know. It’s closed on Thursdays, which catches people out. And the parking lot is shared with beachgoers, so it fills up; some spaces are reserved for residents and are ticketed, so read the signs carefully before you leave the car.
🍺 Barks and Brews Taphouse — about two miles away
14219 Walsingham Rd, Suite K, Largo
Not a park — a bar with a dog park attached, and the highest-rated dog spot near either rental. Indoor and outdoor turf areas where dogs play off-leash, plus a section of the bar that’s dog-free if you want to eat in peace. Craft beer, wine, cocktails and bar food.
How it works: you’ll need to show vaccination records, which you can upload through their app ahead of time to save queueing. Day passes are available alongside monthly and annual memberships, so you don’t need to be a member to visit. Dogs over about ten months need to be spayed or neutered.
Hours are limited — closed Mondays, evenings only Tuesday to Thursday, with longer weekend hours. Check before you set out.
🦆 Eagle Lake Park — Paw Playground
1800 Keene Rd, Largo — about twelve minutes
Three separate fenced areas — one for small dogs and two for large — with good tree shade. The advantage here is what surrounds it: three miles of shaded paved loops you can walk your dog on afterwards, plus boardwalks, a playground and picnic shelters. Dog park first, then a loop on leash.

🌳 Walsingham Park
12615 102nd Ave N, Seminole — roughly halfway between our two rentals
A large county park with a big dog park divided into sections for different-sized dogs, described by visitors as clean and shaded. Plenty of leashed walking on the paved trails around it, plus a lake, playgrounds and shelters.
Closest to Our Seminole Rental
🥇 Boca Ciega Millennium Park — about two miles away
Dog park entrance: 6990 125th St, Seminole (park address 12410 74th Ave N)
A full 1.5 acres split into two large shaded sections, one for small dogs and one for large. Regulars rate it highly and there’s a weekday morning crowd if your dog likes company.
But note: dogs are barred from the boardwalks and the observation tower, which are the best parts of the park. So this is a dog-park-then-leave trip, or one person takes the dog while another climbs the tower.

Lake Seminole Park — no dog park, but good walking
10015 Park Blvd, Seminole. Worth flagging to avoid a wasted trip: there is no fenced dog park here. Dogs are welcome on leash and the two-mile shaded loop is a pleasant walk, but if your dog needs to run, go to Boca Ciega instead. Do keep well back from the water — alligators are commonly seen.

Dog Beaches
🏖️ Fort De Soto Paw Playground — the only one that really counts
3500 Pinellas Bayway S, Tierra Verde — about an hour south, and worth the drive
This is the only beach in Pinellas County where dogs can be off-leash in the water. There are two fenced beach areas, one for large dogs and one for small, sitting right against open sand and surf, plus showers for rinsing off. It has been ranked among the best dog beaches in the country.
Park in the Gulf Pier lot. Elsewhere in the park dogs must be on a leash of six feet or less, and they’re not allowed on the swimming beaches, piers, boardwalks, playgrounds or buildings. Inside the off-leash area dogs need to be under voice control, and you’re expected to fill in any holes they dig.
Give this the best part of a day. There’s a historic fort, seven miles of paved trail, two fishing piers and 328-plus recorded bird species while you’re there.
🌅 Honeymoon Island Dog Beach
At the southern tip of Honeymoon Island State Park, Dunedin. Gulf views and a designated pet beach — but leashed only, unlike Fort De Soto. State park entry fee applies.
🐚 Pass-a-Grille Dog Beach
Small and scenic at the south end of St. Pete Beach, and popular with locals after sunset.
⚠️ Sand Key Park — the one people misread
1060 Gulf Blvd, Clearwater. There’s a good fenced dog park here, with separate small and large sides, a cooling station and fresh water. It is not a dog beach: dogs are not permitted on the beach portion of the park. The dog park is also a fair walk from the main lot, and paid parking applies. Bring bug spray — visitors report serious mosquitoes outside the winter months.

The Rules, Briefly
Pinellas County posts these at every off-leash area, and they’re worth reading once:
- Dogs must be leashed entering and exiting the dog park
- Three dogs maximum per handler
- Dogs must be licensed and vaccinated, with tags on the collar at all times
- Dogs in heat are prohibited
- You’re liable for any injury or damage your dog causes, and you use the park at your own risk
- County parks close at sunset
- Dogs are not allowed on boardwalks or observation towers in county parks, even on leash
Practical Tips for a Florida Dog Trip
🌡️ Check the Pavement Before You Walk
Florida asphalt and sand can burn paw pads well before the air feels unbearable to you. Press the back of your hand to the surface for a few seconds — if you can’t hold it, neither can they. Early morning and evening, always, from May through September.
💧 Bring Your Own Water
Some dog parks have fountains and cooling stations; several don’t, and the Largo Bone Run specifically has none in the off-leash area. Don’t count on it.
🐊 Mind the Water’s Edge
Alligators live in most freshwater lakes and ponds around here, including at Lake Seminole Park and Walsingham Park. Keep dogs leashed and well back from the bank. This is a real risk, not a theoretical one.
🦟 Bug Spray
Shaded dog parks near water mean mosquitoes, especially at dawn and dusk and especially outside winter.
🎾 Bring Bags
Not every smaller park keeps waste bags stocked reliably.
🍽️ Patio Dining
Plenty of restaurants around here welcome dogs on outdoor patios, but policies change and dogs are usually expected to stay off chairs and out of walkways. Ask rather than assume.
