Three miles of shaded paved loops around two lakes, a dog park, boardwalks over the wetlands, and a playground — twelve minutes from our door. If you’ve got young kids, a rented cruiser, or an hour before dinner, this is the one.
Why We Love This Place
Every other ride in our biking guide asks something of you: a drive, a plan, sunscreen, a bit of fitness. Eagle Lake Park asks nothing. It’s the closest trail to both of our rentals, it’s free, it’s open from 7am to sunset, and you can do a quarter mile or five miles depending entirely on how everyone’s feeling.
It’s also genuinely lovely, which is not a given for a park wedged into the middle of the most densely developed county in Florida. The trail runs through pine forest, then under oak canopy, then out along wetlands, and the scenery actually changes as you go. There are turtles and wading birds in the lakes, and eagles have nested here long enough to give the place its name.
The history is nice too: this was the Taylor family’s citrus grove. They helped found Largo back when it was called Citrus City, and the land around their homestead held one of the last significant pine forests left in the county. They left it to the people of Pinellas.

Park Map
The Loops
The paved trail is a figure-eight rather than a single circuit, which is what makes it so flexible:
- The smaller loop is about 5/8 mile.
- The larger loop is about 1 3/8 miles.
- Both together come to roughly 2 miles, and with the connecting branches and spurs you can build anything from a quarter mile up to about five without much retracing.
The surface is 12 feet wide with some wider passing areas, smooth, and on a gentle grade throughout — navigable for most wheelchairs, mobility equipment, and strollers. There are benches and picnic tables along the way to break it up.
The boardwalks are the highlight: roughly 2,000 feet of them, extending out over the water and through the wetlands. Shaded, stable, and wide enough for a wheelchair or walker.
The shell paths on the south side are the unpaved option — a bit more adventurous, and where you’ll see more wildlife.
Where to Park
Three main areas, and which one you pick genuinely matters here.
🚲 Lot 2 — For Riding
Near shelters two and three. This is the ranger’s own recommendation for anyone who wants to get their miles in on the paved trail, and it’s next to the open field.
👨👩👧 Lot 3 — For Families
Near shelters four, five and six, and closest to the playground and the climbing tree. If the kids are the point of the trip, park here. Note that it’s about a mile’s drive through the park to reach it — people do miss it.
♿ North Lot — For Accessibility
The paved lots off Belleair Road at the north end have four designated accessible spaces, all van-accessible with striped access aisles.
What’s There
🐕 Paw Playground
The dog park has three separate fenced areas — one for small dogs and two for large. Shelter one sits beside it (and is the one shelter you can’t reserve).
🛝 Playground
Fenced and shaded, with swings, slides, and climbing structures. There’s a restroom and water fountain right there, plus open-air picnic tables and a grill, a picnic shelter, and one of the fishing piers. Everything a family needs within sight of a bench.
🎣 Fishing Piers
Several piers reach out over the lakes. Catch and release only, from designated areas — no bank fishing. It’s a nice way to keep a kid occupied while everyone else rides.

🏕️ Picnic Shelters
Six covered shelters, five of them reservable. Each has grills, picnic tables, a prep table, bins, and a water spigot. Worth booking ahead if you’re bringing a group.

A small thing, but a good one.
Three Ways to Use It
🌅 The Before-Breakfast Loop — 2 miles, 30 minutes
Gates open at 7am. Ride both loops before the heat arrives and before the crowds do — the park averages around 2,000 visitors a day, and early is when it feels like yours.
🧒 The Kids’ Morning — as long as it lasts
Park at Lot 3. Short loop on bikes, boardwalk to look for turtles, playground until someone’s hungry, picnic shelter for lunch. This is the whole day handled, ten minutes from the house, for nothing.
🐾 The Dog Outing
Paw Playground first to burn off the energy, then a shaded loop on leash. One of the few places nearby where the dog gets a proper run and you still get your walk.
Know Before You Go
🚴 Share the Trail
The paved loop carries walkers, runners, cyclists, skaters, and dogs all at once. Regulars are good about keeping right and passing left — do the same, and call your passes. It’s not a place to ride fast.
📅 Weekends Are Busy
Expect crowds on weekends and holidays. Midweek mornings are a completely different park.
🔊 Road Noise
Being honest: the park sits close to a busy road, and you’ll hear traffic from most of it. The boardwalks and the back wetlands are the quietest corners.
🅿️ Don’t Miss the Playground
Worth repeating — it’s about a mile of driving into the park, and visitors regularly fail to find it. Head for Lot 3.
👮 It Feels Safe
Rangers patrol the trails regularly, which is a fair thing to know if you’re sending a teenager out for a ride on their own.

Getting There from Our Vacation Rentals
From our Largo rental (1731 Clearwater Harbor Dr): roughly 5 miles, about 12 minutes. East on Walsingham Road, then north toward Keene Road.
From our Seminole rental (13189 87th Ave N): roughly 5 miles, about 15 minutes. Northeast via Seminole Blvd and Belleair Road.
