Arrival Day: Groceries and Essentials

Nobody wants to spend the first evening of a holiday hunting for a supermarket. Here’s the practical stuff — where to do the big shop, which pharmacies are open at 2 am, where the urgent care is if a child gets sick, and the one mistake that costs visitors a fortune. Read this in the car on the way in.

🛒 The Big Shop

Publix — Indian Rocks Shopping Center, 12022 Indian Rocks Rd, Largo

This is the one. Open 7 am to 10 pm, seven days a week, minutes from our Largo place and an easy run from Seminole. 4.6 stars across 1,650 reviews, and the produce gets specific praise.

Why it’s the only stop you need: full supermarket, a deli that makes the famous Publix subs to order, a bakery, and — usefully — it sells beer and wine. If you’re not after spirits, that’s your whole arrival shop in one trip.

Two small things. Publix isn’t cheap, and visitors from elsewhere in the country find Florida grocery prices a shock. And prices do vary slightly between Publix branches, so if something looks off, it might be a couple of dollars less at another store.

🥪 Indian Rocks Cafe Deli & Market — 1401 Gulf Blvd

Not a supermarket, but the right stop for a beach day. 4.7 stars, excellent coffee — one visitor called it the best macchiato they’d ever had — plus avocado toast, breakfast burritos, and sandwiches made to order. A group ordered eight and had them in thirty minutes. Pies and lemon bars too. Open 8am to 5pm.

Worth knowing for the morning you can’t face cooking, or a picnic to take to the sand.

⚠️ The Mistake That Costs Visitors a Fortune

There are small convenience stores dotted along Gulf Blvd, and they are wildly expensive. We’re not being unkind — visitors document it in detail:

  • $11 for a bag of shredded cheese that’s about $2.29 at Publix
  • $5 for a single avocado
  • $11 for an eight-pack of taco shells that costs under $2 elsewhere
  • Half a gallon of milk at $5.75 against about $1.75 at a supermarket

One reviewer calculated a consistent 70% markup across the store. Two of the beach convenience stores also carry ratings below 3.0, with repeated complaints about staff.

The fix is simple: do one proper shop at Publix on the way in. It’s five minutes from the beach and open until 10 pm, so even a late arrival works. Keep the beach shops for the bag of ice you forgot.

If you do need something on the strip, Beach Connections (19541 Gulf Blvd, Indian Shores) is the best-reviewed of them — clean, well stocked, and staff people actually praise. Still expensive, but pleasant.

🍷 Spirits and Wine

Publix covers beer and wine. For spirits, or a proper wine selection:

  • 688 Fine Wine & Spirits (14590 Walsingham Rd, Largo) — the closest to our Largo place, family-run and serving the area since 1979. Full range of spirits, wine, beer, cigars, mixers and non-alcoholic options, and staff who make genuinely good recommendations. One visitor was charmed by the miniature bottle sets. Limes at the counter. 9 am to 9 pm, 11 am to 6 pm Sundays.
  • Luekens Wine & Spirits (6950 Seminole Blvd) — 4.7 stars across nearly 1,100 reviews and the biggest selection nearby. Recently remodelled, signed aisles, a non-alcoholic section, Friday tastings, and staff regulars named by name. Open 8 am to 10 pm. Closest to our Seminole place.
  • Wine & Liquors 2 (9362 Oakhurst Rd, Seminole) — small, spotless, open until midnight, and handy if you need something late. Some prices run above the supermarket, so check the wine.

Florida sells beer and wine in supermarkets but spirits only in licensed liquor stores. Worth knowing if you’re used to somewhere that does both.

💊 Pharmacies

The important one first.

🌙 Open 24 hours — Walsingham Rd, Largo

There is a CVS at 13998 Walsingham Rd, and a Walgreens at 14004 Walsingham Rd, essentially opposite each other, and both are open around the clock. That’s the answer to a sick child at 2 am, a forgotten prescription, or a sunburn that turns out worse than you thought. About ten minutes from our Largo place.

Note the pharmacy counter itself keeps shorter hours than the shop — typically closing for a lunch break and overnight — so call ahead if you need a prescription dispensed rather than something off the shelf.

🏖️ On the beach — CVS, 353 Gulf Blvd

Right on the corner at Indian Rocks Beach, 7 am to 11 pm, and the easy walk-to option for sunscreen, beach kit, cold drinks and basics. Staff get consistently friendly reviews and will happily point you at things.

🚑 If Someone Gets Ill or Hurt

Worth knowing before you need it. All of these are walk-in urgent care, not emergency rooms — for anything serious, call 911.

🥇 TGH Urgent Care — 7601 Seminole Blvd, Seminole

Our pick. 4.6 stars across nearly 1,200 reviews, open 8 am to 8 pm every day including weekends, and there’s an easy online pre-registration. Reviewers repeatedly describe short waits, thorough care, and staff who explain things properly. One visitor specifically wrote about being glad they chose it while on holiday. They do EKGs and stitches, and take a wide range of insurance.

🥈 AFC Urgent Care — 11241 Park Blvd, Seminole

4.5 stars across nearly 2,000 reviews, with X-ray and lab on site. Open 8 am to 7 pm weekdays, 8 am to 4 pm on weekends. Reviewers on holiday with children rate it well.

🥉 BayCare Urgent Care — 13670 Walsingham Rd, Largo

The closest to our Largo place, which matters when someone’s unwell. Open 8 am to 8 pm weekdays, 9 am to 6 pm weekends, and they offer a virtual-provider option that speeds things up. Reviews are more mixed than the Seminole clinics — good on speed and staff, with some complaints about onward referrals — so if it’s not urgent and you don’t mind the drive, the Seminole options rate higher.

Also

CareSpot Urgent Care of East Largo (4895 E Bay Dr) holds a remarkable 4.9 stars and, unusually, dispenses antibiotics on site so you don’t need a separate pharmacy trip. It’s further east, but several visitors describe it saving a holiday. Open 8 am to 8 pm daily.

🏖️ Beach Kit Without Buying Any

IRB Chairs — on the sand at 1700 Gulf Blvd

4.9 stars across nearly 400 reviews, and one of the best-rated businesses anywhere near us. They set up chairs and umbrellas on the beach and take them down again — no gear to carry, no sand in the car. Umbrellas are properly installed with a drill auger, so they stay put in a breeze.

How it works: book online or simply text them, including on the day. The owner posts a daily weather and beach report that regulars check religiously. A visitor who priced every chair company on the local beaches found these the best value. They’ll move your set-up as the sun shifts, and they returned a watch left behind after closing.

9 am to 5 pm. If you’re at our Largo place and want a beach day with nothing to organise, this is it.

Further south, Tyler & Tyler operate at Archibald Beach Park in Madeira Beach (5.0 stars, and they lend beach toys for the kids), and Shady Beach Rentals cover Treasure Island.

🐟 Fresh Fish for the Grill

Both our places have a full kitchen and a grill, and buying Gulf fish off a local boat is the single best use of them.

Nachman’s Seafood Market & Smokehouse (17811 Gulf Blvd, Redington Shores) — 4.8 stars. Fresh, frozen and smoked, and they’ll tell you what was caught where and how to cook it. Closed Sundays.

A Few More Practical Notes

🅿️ Beach Parking Is Paid Nearly Everywhere

Download ParkMobile before you arrive. Most beach access parking here is app-based, mobile signal at some lots is poor, and standing in the sun trying to install an app is nobody’s idea of a holiday.

👉 Our beaches guide covers parking in detail

☀️ Buy Sunscreen Here, Not at Home

Reef-safe sunscreen is easy to find locally, and you’ll get through more than you expect. The CVS on Gulf Blvd has plenty.

🦟 Bug Spray

Worth having in the house from day one if you’re planning any of the boardwalks, preserves, or mangrove paddling.

🧊 Ice and a Cooler Bag

Publix sells both. A cooler bag in the car makes a difference on a hot day between the shop and the house.

💵 Cash Is Still Useful

A few local favourites are cash-only — The Limani at Pass-a-Grille among them — and some parking lots prefer it. Worth having some.

📱 Worth Downloading Before You Fly

ParkMobile for parking, the FWC Fish Rules app if you plan to fish, and a tide chart if you’re shelling or paddling.
