The nearest place to a proper beach day near our Largo place: 95 acres of Gulf-front county park with lifeguards, showers and changing rooms, a shaded dog park rated one of the best in Pinellas, a playground, fishing, and all-day parking for about seven dollars. It’s ten minutes north of our door, and it’s everything Clearwater Beach is, without the crowds.
Why Sand Key Instead of Clearwater Beach
Sand Key Park sits at the very north tip of Sand Key island, right on Clearwater Pass, looking across at Clearwater Beach — which you can see from the sand, and which is where everyone else is.
The park carries 4.7 stars across more than 10,500 reviews, and the word that comes up again and again is local. Less crowded, easier parking, and — this is the real difference — it’s a park, not just a beach access. There are pavilions, trails, a playground and a dog park behind the dunes, so a family can spread out and nobody has to sit on sand all day.
One reviewer of twenty-plus years put it well: gulf-blue water, shells for the collectors, sunsets, showers, changing rooms, picnic areas, playground, dog park, and cheap parking all day. There are crowds, but there’s so much space you hardly notice.

🅿️ Parking — and One Warning Worth Reading
About $7 for the whole day. That’s the headline, and it’s a bargain: other beaches on this coast charge around $4.50 an hour, and the Clearwater Beach garage runs $16 for three hours. There are pay kiosks in the lots, and you can pay by phone instead.
⚠️ Pay by phone, not at the kiosk. Multiple visitors report that the parking meters at Sand Key have been tampered with — card-skimming devices on the machines. The advice from people who use this park regularly is to skip the kiosk entirely and pay through the app or the county’s own site. It takes the same thirty seconds and there’s nothing to skim.
Download ParkMobile before you leave the house. Signal in the lots is fine, but it’s one less thing to do standing in the sun.
If you’re here for a while, the county sells an annual beach parking pass. Reviewers reckon it pays for itself quickly if you’re going more than a handful of times.
🏖️ What It’s Like on the Sand
The sand is crushed shell, not powder
Beautiful and white, but it’s made largely of crushed shell rather than the powder-soft sand at Clearwater Beach — which is why the shelling is good here, and why it can be uncomfortable barefoot. Water shoes are worth it, especially for children.
Lifeguards, which is rarer than you’d think
The county staffs lifeguard towers here — the main one is marked Central 1 — with a patrol truck on the sand. Most of the smaller beach accesses near us have no lifeguard at all, so if you’re bringing children or anyone who isn’t a confident swimmer, this matters more than the sand does.
Wildlife you might actually see
Dolphins work Clearwater Pass at the north end of the park and are seen regularly from the beach. Visitors also report manatees and sea turtles. The pass is the best spot — stand at the north end and watch the boats come through.

The beach is a bit farther from the parking lot — bring the right wagon
This is the one thing to know before you load the car. It’s a proper walk from the parking to the water, and it’s soft sand the whole way. If you’re bringing a wagon, bring the one with big wheels — small wheels dig in and you’ll regret it about forty feet from the car park.
Opinions vary on how bad it is. Some people find it a trek; others say it’s fine. Either way, plan one trip rather than three.
🪑 Chairs, Umbrellas and Food
There’s a concession set up on the sand. Current prices, from the sign on the beach:
- Umbrella and two chairs — $44.95 + tax
- Cabana and two chairs — $59.95 + tax
Card only — no cash accepted. Rentals are non-transferable and valid until at least 5pm daily, weather permitting, and the crew may take umbrellas down at any time for safety if the wind gets up. They also redeem hotel vouchers, if you’ve arrived with one.
Worth comparing: the beach chair companies at Indian Rocks Beach and Madeira Beach run cheaper, and IRB Chairs will set up and take down for you. If you’re coming from our Largo place and price matters, bring your own or hire down there.
🌭 Sand Key Beach Grill
A food trailer on site doing burgers, hot dogs, corn dogs and the like, with packaged ice alongside — genuinely useful if your cooler is running warm. They also advertise beach weddings, which tells you something about the setting.
Honest note: reviews on the food are mixed — some visitors find it pricey and unremarkable for what it is. It’s there and it’s convenient, but if you care about lunch, either pack it or eat at one of the places just south (below). More than one reviewer has asked the county for more food trucks.
🐕 The Dog Park
This is the underrated part, and it’s a genuine reason to choose Sand Key over other beaches.
There’s a fenced dog park inside the park, on the bay side, and it’s described by locals as one of the best in Pinellas County: all grass, no dirt or weeds, and heavily shaded — which in a Florida summer is the whole ballgame. Kept notably clean.
But dogs are not allowed on the beach itself. That’s the trade: your dog gets a proper shaded run, and then goes back in the car while you go to the sand. Plan accordingly.
🌳 The Rest of the Park
- Restrooms, changing rooms and outdoor showers — the showers get specific praise for rinsing off before you get in the car. Some reviewers say the restrooms need more attention than they get; don’t expect spotless at 4pm on a Saturday.
- Playground — near the main facilities.
- Picnic pavilions — shaded, with grills, and bookable for groups. Good for a birthday or a family gathering.
- Walking and biking trails — through the mangroves on the Intracoastal side, away from the beach entirely. Quiet, and good for birds.
- Volleyball — pick-up games happen on the sand.

🍽️ Eating Just South of the Park
Three good options within a couple of minutes, all on Gulf Blvd:
Columbia Restaurant Sand Key — 1241 Gulf Blvd
The occasion restaurant, and a Florida institution — an outpost of the original Ybor City Columbia. 7,300+ reviews at 4.5. The 1905 salad tossed at the table, sangria by the pitcher, empanadas, crab croquettes, paella and bread pudding. White-tablecloth without being stuffy, arched ceilings and tile work, and a deck with a water view.
Worth knowing: reviewers repeatedly single out their allergen menu as the best they’ve encountered — genuinely useful if someone in your group has restrictions.
Backwaters — 1261 Gulf Blvd
4.5 across 2,390 reviews. The grouper sandwich gets called the best people have had, crab cakes and firecracker shrimp both well liked, and there’s outdoor seating over the water. Complimentary valet parking, which is a small mercy on Gulf Blvd. Open 11am–10pm daily.
Maggie Mae’s Waterfront — 1261 Gulf Blvd #104
Breakfast and brunch, 7am to 2pm every day, with a deck over the water. Casual, cheap, friendly, and the obvious stop before a beach morning. Expect a wait around 10.30am.

Big-wheeled wagon, water shoes, more water than you think, and a cooler — there’s ice for sale on site if it runs warm. Sunscreen: the beach here is wide and open with no natural shade.

Weekday mornings are the sweet spot — easy parking, cool sand, and the water is calmest. Sunset is the other good time; you’re facing due west with nothing in the way.

Getting There from Our Vacation Rentals
From our Largo place (1731 Clearwater Harbor Dr): about ten minutes. North up Gulf Blvd through Indian Rocks Beach and Belleair Beach, and the park is on your left just before the Clearwater Pass bridge. It’s a nice bike ride too.
From our Seminole place (13189 87th Ave N): about twenty minutes, west to Gulf Blvd then north.
